Why does my car idle very low and turn off when I put it in reverse? Why does my car idle very low and turn off when I put it in reverse? I have a manual (standard) transmission car that I recently bought, and today I parked it in reverse in my garage and it turned off twice. The car idles very low (below 1000 RPMs) and you have to take it to like 5000 RPMs to be able to go up the little incline in my driveway and park it. I have owned manual transmission cars but last time I drove one was about 5 years ago. What could cause the car to idle so low in reverse? Is it a mechanical problem or is it me and the fact that I still havent got to know the car well? Is it normal to have to practice a lot to drive a manual trans car? No rude answers please. Saturn . How to Replace a Turn Signal Switch in an SUVA sport utility vehicle's turn signal switch, commonly known as a multifunction switch, controls the turn signals and hazard flashers. If the switch fails, you’ll need to replace it immediately for safety reasons, as well as to keep your SUV legal when driving. While the switches themselves range in price based on the year, make and model, the replacement procedure is relatively the same from SUV to SUV. If you’re handy with a screwdriver and have some basic mechanical aptitude, you can replace the turn signal switch in your SUV in less than 30 minutes. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Trim tool Screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Pry the upper clamshell off the top of the steering column using the trim tool. The clamshell is the semi-circular piece of trim covering the steering column just in front of the steering wheel. Set the clamshell aside once it’s off. 2 Disconnect the wiring harness from the turn signal switch by hand. The switch is the box shaped device in the steering column where the turn signal lever attaches. 3 Remove the retaining screw from the switch using the Phillips screwdriver. Lift the switch up and out of the steering column. Insert the new switch in its place. 4 Thread the retaining screw into the new switch by hand and then tighten it with the screwdriver. Connect the wiring harness to the new switch by hand. 5 Reinstall the clamshell in reverse of how you removed it, making sure the hazard flasher button protrudes through the clamshell where it should. Saturn . How to Replace My Turn Signal LeverYour turn signal lever, or stalk as some call it, attaches to the turn signal switch inside the steering column. The lever itself allows you to easily turn the switch on or off by moving the lever the up or down, which activates the turn signal system. While the switch and lever assembly, often called a multi-function switch, is anything but cheap, you can save yourself the labor charge by tackling this relatively easy automotive repair job yourself if you possess basic mechanical repair skills. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Trim tool Phillips screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Pry the top clamshell off the steering column with the trim tool. You may need to remove some screws with the Phillips screwdriver depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle. Usually, plastic ears that protrude from the edges where it connects to the lower clamshell hold the upper clamshell in place directly behind the steering wheel. 2 Remove the wiring harness from the switch body by hand. You can depress the retaining clip with one finger while pulling the clip outward. 3 Remove the retaining screw with the Phillips screwdriver and set it aside. Lift the switch and lever assembly up and out of the steering column. Position the new one in its place and then thread the retaining screw in by hand. 4 Tighten the retaining screw with the Phillips screwdriver. Connect the wiring harness to the new switch. Reinstall the clamshell by screwing or snapping it back in place. *. Chapter 12: Keeping Your Electrical System in Tune 4. Pick up your ratchet handle and stick the square end into the square hole in the spark-plug socket. If you can work more comfortably by adding a couple of extensions between the handle and the socket so that you can move the handle freely from side to side without hitting anything, go ahead. You add them in the same way you added the socket to the handle. (If you have trouble with getting the plug loose, see the "Dealing with difficult plugs" section, which follows, for encouragement.) The little knob on the back of the ratchet handle makes the ratchet turn the socket either clockwise or counterclockwise) You can tell which way the handle will turn the plug by listening to the clicks that the handle makes when you move it in one direction. If it clicks when you move it to the right, it will turn the socket counterclockwise when you move it, silently, to the left. If the clicks are audible on the leftward swing, it will move the socket clockwise on the rightward swing. Every screw, nut, 509

If your ratchet clicks in the wrong direction, just move that little knob to reverse the direction. Figure 12-9 shows you the proper way to use a socket wrench, and the sidebar "Breaking loose old plugs and misconceptions" tells you how to handle difficult plugs. Figure 12-9: Using a socket wrench. 5. Loosen the spark plug by turning it counterclockwise. When the ratchet turns freely, finish the job by removing the ratchet handle and turning the socket by hand until the plug is free from the engine. After you've removed the spark plug from the engine, remove the plug from the socket. But don't go on to the next plug until you've read the plug (see the section "Reading your spark plugs" and Table 12-1) and Saturn . If a 2000 kg car hits a tree with 500 N of force over a time of 0 5 seconds what is the magnitude of its impulse?
Ford Focus. * gapped and replaced it, following the instructions later in this chapter. '>art'": ^eeP'n9 ^our ^ar m ^ooc" Condition, System by System Breaking loose old plugs — and misconceptions You may have some difficulty loosening the spark plugs for the first time. Grease, sludge, and other junk may have caused the plugs to stick in place, especially if it's been a long time since they were changed. To get the proper leverage, place your free hand over the head of the wrench, grasping the head firmly, and pull the handle as hard as you can, hitting it gently with the palm of your hand to get it going. (See Figure 12-9.) If you can't budge it, don't feel like a weakling. At first I thought I had trouble because I was female, but the biggest man in my first auto class had problems loosening the plugs on my car. The general opinion is that strength depends less on the size or sex of the individual and more on the way in which you have been taught to focus your strength in your hands or on the tool you are using. I now approach hard-to-move objects with the proper tool and the conviction that I can move anything by pouring all my strength down my arms and into my hands. It works! Also, the longer the handle, the more leverage it gives you. You'll feel better knowing that after you've installed your new plugs by hand, it will be a lot easier to get them loose the next time. So persevere. I've never met a plug that didn't give up and come out, eventually. The section called "Dealing with difficult plugs" gives you additional tips. Dealing With difficult plugs With all the stuff crammed under the hoods of vehicles, it can be hard to get at some spark plugs and, even when you can reach them easily, they may be difficult to remove. This section provides tips on extracting your spark plugs with a minimum of hassle. Saturn . What is the fastest - top speed- car on the road?

Then you can work on it with the satisfaction of knowing that, when you get the darn thing finished, you will have finished the job. If you find that one or more plugs are blocked by an air conditioner or some other part, try using various ratchet handle extensions to get around the problem. There are universal extensions that allow the ratchet handle to be held at odd angles; T-bar handles for better leverage; and offset handles for hard-to-reach places. (See Chapter 2 for examples.) On some vehicles, you can't get at the plugs until you remove other parts that are in the way. On some transverse engines, you have to remove the top engine mount bolts by the radiator so that you can tilt the engine forward to replace the rear spark plugs. And on other engines, it may be easier to get to some spark plugs from underneath or through the wheel well area. . Chapter 12: Keeping Your Electrical System in Tune On some small cars equipped with optional big engines, you have to hoist the entire engine out of the car to reach at least one plug. If you have one of these beasts, I bet that when you finally get that plug out, you'll find that it's never been replaced during all the professional tune-ups you've paid for. And you've paid even more because that one funky plug probably not only increased your fuel consumption but also added to air pollution. Both you and your car should be glad to get rid of it! If you absolutely cannot reach the offending plug, you can always drive to your service station and humbly ask them to change just that one plug. They won't like it, but it is a last resort. If you get to that point, you'll probably be glad to pay to have it done. But do try very hard first. If you can't get to the plug in the ordinary way, go under, over, around, or through gaps in the thing that's blocking it. Or get someone to help you move what's in the way (but be sure that you can get it back in place correctly). Use your imagination; it's the only hard part of the job. And you won't have to do it again for a long time. V?-~ b '* you're lucky enough to own a car without air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and so on, chances are much greater that all your plugs will be easy to get at. Think it over next time you're tempted to buy a vehicle with all the "extras." Those "extras" tend to block the things you want to work on, and they often go wrong themselves. Some, like air conditioning if you live in a hot climate, are worth it. Others, like power brakes on a small car, are not. Reading your spark plugs You can actually read your spark plugs for valuable "clues" about how your engine is operating. To read your spark plugs, follow these steps: 1. When the first spark plug is out of the engine, remove the plug from the spark plug socket and take a look at it. Saturn . How many feet is the blind-spot behind a truck?
